Therapist’s Gender and Personality

I found it fascinating to work with a gentle male and a strong female, and I think that the gender of the therapists contributed to the types of transferences I experienced. I would describe my parents as having similar personality characteristics. Had I worked with a strong male and a gentle female, however, I believe that the transferences might have played out differently. It is of note, however, that many of the same transferences were evoked by both therapists. Both were “good enough” in that they evoked feelings of being supported and held, and both were “not enough” in that they evoked feelings of being neglected, not listened to, rejected.

My positive transferences toward the gentle, unassuming therapist in Creative Music Therapy were that he was very supportive and accepting and made me feel safe. My most salient negative transference toward him was that no matter what he did, he was not enough. I found the therapist in Analytical Music Therapy to be very strong, confident, and somewhat distant. My positive transferences toward her were that she was very present and holding and made me feel heard and supported. My most salient negative transference toward her was that no matter what I did, I was inadequate.
